"AMERICA'S BATTALION" IN AFGHANISTAN
In July 2009, President Barack Obama ordered thousands of Marines to the Taliban stronghold of the Helmand River Valley in Afghanistan. The Marines of the 2/8, know as "America's Battalion" received violent opposition and proved instrumental in the offensive. This event Marked President Obama's first military action as was seen as a sign of his commitment to the war effort.
