Judging for the Eyes of History 2007 STILL PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST will take place on Saturday and Sunday, January 27th and 28th, at National Geographic auditorium. The public is welcome to observe the judging.

STILL CONTEST JUDGES 2007

Carolyn Cole is a staff photographer for the Los Angeles Times, where she has spent 12 years covering national and international news. Her coverage of the civil crisis in Liberia won the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for feature photography. She was Pulitzer finalist in 2005 for her coverage of the Gaza settlements closure. Cole is a two-time winner of the Robert Capa Courage In Photojournalism Award for her work in Iraq and Liberia (2004) and her photographs of the Church of the Nativity, Bethlehem (2003). Her combined work from Liberia and Iraq also earned her the title of newspaper photographer of the year from both the University of Missouri, Pictures of the Year competition (2004), and the National Press Photographers Association Best of Photojournalism (2004). She is a two-time winner of the Sigma Delta Chi award for news photography and has won three World Press Photo Awards. Cole is currently based in New York.

David Griffin is the Director of Photography of National Geographic magazine headquartered in Washington, DC. He is responsible for the overall photographic direction of the magazine, working with a staff of photo editors and photographers from around the globe.

Previously he was the Creative Director of U.S.News & World Report, Design Director of National Geographic Books, Associate Director of Layout & Design at National Geographic magazine. Before magazines David honed his journalistic skills at a number of newspapers: The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Hartford Courant, The Everett (Wa.) Herald, and the Columbia (Mo.) Daily Tribune.

David has been honored by the National Press Photographer Assoc., University of Missouri’s Pictures of the Year competition, Assoc. of Magazine Publishers, Ohio Newspaper Photographer Assoc., the Hearst Collegiate Photojournalism Awards, the Washington Art Directors Club, the Society of Newspaper Design, Print, and Communications Arts.

David has an undergraduate degree in journalism from Ohio University and is an alumni of the Stanford Professional Publishing program. He is married, has a ten-year-old son, and lives in Arlington, Virginia

Janet Reeves began her career at the Rocky Mountain News in 1982 as a photo lab technician. During the following 24 years, she has risen through the ranks – going from the tech position to photographer, photo editor and finally accepting the director of photography position in 1993.

Janet is a respected leader in photojournalism and under her direction; the photography staff at the News has won two Pulitzer Prizes for Breaking News, one in 2000 for their coverage of the Columbine Tragedy and in 2003 for the Colorado Wildfires. In 2006 Staff photographer, Todd Heisler, was awarded the Pulitzer for Feature Photography. The Rocky’s photo staff was named “photo staff of the year” in 2004 and 2005 at the Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar.  The photo editing team at the Rocky was awarded second this year for portfolio of work in NPPA Best of Photojournalism and Janet was named photo editor of the year for newspapers. They also won the Robert F. Kennedy award in 2000 for work surrounding the struggle and death of an undocumented Guatemalan child in Colorado.

Janet’s commitment to excellence is reflected by the hundreds of awards she and her staff have received for photography and photo editing from the World Press Association, The Society of Newspaper Design, The National Press Photographers Association, Pictures of the Year, The Scripps Howard National Journalism Awards, the Alfred Eisenstaedt Award, The National Headliners Awards and many others.

Special judges this year include John Francis Ficara and Frank Johnston.
