EARTHQUAKE/TSUNAMI RELIEF

As the toll of death and destruction mounts, scenes of the recent earthquake and tsunami disaster dominate the news. Images and videos of the devastation are chronicled in washingtonpost.com's Camera Works, the NY Times' multimedia feature Asia's Deadly Waves, and on the web sites of all major news organizations.  International aid organizations are accepting donations to help victims of the powerful earthquake and resulting tsunamis that caused widespread destruction in parts of Asia and Africa. If you are planning to contribute, here are some convenient links to a variety of established international relief organizations: GOOGLE tsunami relief page  • USAID.GOV list of non profit relief agencies • CNN list of aid agencies

2005 WHNPA PROJECT GRANT AWARDED TO SUSANA RAAB

November 11, 2005 Washington, D.C. freelance photographer Susana Raab has been selected as the winner of the White House News Photographers Association 2005 Project Grant. Her project, "Consumed: The Culture and Legacy of Fast Food in the United States," examines the culture and the legacy of fast food production in the United States, focusing on four aspects of the multi-billion-dollar fast food industry: Marketing and advertising; the labor force - the largest outside of the U.S. government; obesity in the nation as a side-effect of fast food over consumption and the impact of the industry on the national landscape. Exhibition now through Jan 1, 2006 • Behind the Velvet Rope

Behind the Velvet Rope, an exhibition of photographs by WHNPA member Chris Usher opens November 11 at the Ainslie Art Center, Episcopal High School, Alexandria, Virginia

Washington, DC (November 4, 2005)--In 1998, while on assignment at the White House, award-winningphotojournalist Chris Usher began pointing the Leica he always wears around his neck away from the President of the United States. Thus began Behind the Velvet Rope, an ongoing documentary project shot entirely with two Leica rangefinder cameras on Kodak Tri-X black and white film.

His primary subjects are not, as one might expect, the President, presidential candidates and other Washington notables. Instead, Usher focuses on the men and women who work tirelessly to create, manipulate, and disseminate the essence of the Presidential persona to the public. These often unknown but vital players include the Clinton and Bush administration staffs, the Gore and Bushcampaign staffs, the local media and event staff, the Secret Service, the ever-present White House Press Corps, and lastly, the constituents the presidency serves.

The 51 images in this exhibition were selected from more than 20,000 as representative of the kinds of pictures Usher likes to make. “In my personal work,a photo has to mean something. Otherwise, it’s just a pretty picture. I try to make pictures that are well composed, make good use of available light, and capture a moment.” Usher combines his experience as a veteran photographer and approach to shooting “as if I were seeing everything through the eyes of a ten year old child.”

The exhibition opens Friday, November 11, 2005 inthe Ainslie Art Center, Episcopal High School, Alexandria, Virginia with a reception at 5:30pm. The exhibition runs through January 1, 2006. Additional venues will be announced at a later date.

Photojournalist Chris Usher was born and raised in St. Louis. He received a degree in journalism from the University of Indiana at Bloomington and spent several years as a newspaper photographer before going freelance and moving to Washington, DC in 1990. All of the images in the exhibition can be viewed at www.chrisusher.com.© 1999 Chris Usher Photography. All rights reserved. 7.27.99--Washington, DC--In order to secure a better spot in the OEOB briefing room, members of the press pool opt to ascend four flights of stairs rather than wait on the infamously unreliable antiquated elevator.
