JUDGES

The 2010 Student Contest judges are Molly Roberts, Chad McNeeley, and Stephen Crowley.

MollyMolly Roberts, a photography editor and photographer for Smithsonian Magazine, still remembers the eureka moment in a Harvard Square bookstore, when a Robert Frank book called " The Americans" captured her heart and mind and planted the seed of a passion for photography that has been life long. As a picture editor at The Washington Post Magazine and National Geographic books, Roberts has collaborated with other talented photographers and art directors to create compelling and award winning picture stories and cutting-edge portfolios. She is committed to the power of visual journalism to inform and compel positive change in our society and the world. American Photography, New York Art Directors Club, Society of Publication Designers and others have honored Roberts' work. Her personal work focuses on American families facing contemporary issues and overcoming adversity. Roberts received a B.A in Art History and studied photography in the graduate program at the University of Maryland, College Park.

McNeeleyChad McNeeley is an active duty Navy photojournalist. The Iowa native has lived in Florida, Hawaii, New York and just about everywhere in between. This wide variety of landscapes and influences has carved out a photographer with the ability, insight and anticipatory skills to capture the most important and personal moments in his documentary work. McNeeley is currently stationed at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., working as the official photographer to Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Adm. Mike Mullen. He started his assignment in D.C. as the official photographer to then-Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University and selected as a student at the Eddie Adams Workshop, McNeeley's photographs have been published in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Washington Times, Boston Herald, Time magazine and Newsweek among others.

CrowleyStephen Crowley approaches his work with the same sense of exploration and wonder as when he was armed with a "Polaroid Swinger" at the age of 13. Over the last 25 years he has tried to find insightful moments in the midst of breaking national and international news that can sometimes define, in a single image, politics and culture. In his personal work Crowley searches for morsels of humanity, irony and humor, collecting images of the country's character as hinted by physical structures, shifting light patterns and happenstance. On Feb. 5, 2002, Crowley, a graduate of the photography program at Daytona State College, was cited as "Photographer of the Year" by the White House News Photographers' Association for a portfolio that included his essays "Voices of Afghanistan" and "A Day in the Life of President Bush." In 2002 the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography was awarded to Crowley and four other photographers at The New York Times for work produced during the war in Afghanistan. That same year he received an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degrees from the Corcoran College of Art + Design in Washington, D.C. In 2005 American Photo Magazine included Crowley on its list of the 100 Most Important People in Photography. His personal photography has been exhibited in shows at the Library of Congress, The National Geographic Society, and the Corcoran Art Museum.
