2014 Eyes of History: Multimedia Contest rules & entry

The creation of the Multimedia Contest aims to recognize the efforts of our colleagues who create, design and produce stories and packages that are distributed primarily on or by the Internet.

At least one member of a project must meet eligibility requirements for WHNPA membership to enter the Multimedia Contest.

• An entry fee of $50.00 includes entry into one category. Each additional category entered costs an additional $10. The fees must be sent to WHNPA (7119 Ben Franklin Station, Washington DC, 20044-7199) by check or Paypal. Only one entry fee per entrant is required. Please list the categories you have entered in your submission e-mail and the total amount paid.

• All entries must have been published on or after Jan. 1, 2013 and before Dec. 31, 2013. Freelance work is welcome.

• Only one member of the team that produced the entry needs meet the eligibility requirements for WHNPA membership. For example, a project that uses wire photography by a non-eligible photographer may be entered if the project was edited by a WHNPA member. Likewise, an eligible photographer may enter a project produced by a non-eligible entity.

• Please note that the Multimedia contest will not accept stand-alone video submissions, i.e. those that contain 100% video. Multimedia projects can include a mix of video, stills, panoramas, time-lapses, graphics, audio, animation, text, or other visual elements, but they cannot be stand-alone videos. Please consider the 2014 WHNPA video contest for entering stand-alone videos.

• Entrants acknowledge that they have the right to display all content on their personal or professional web sites.

• All questions about the Multimedia contest can be directed to contest.multimedia@whnpa.org.

Please note in entry whether your entry is a Linear or Nonlinear story. For example: “News Story – linear”.

News Story (Linear or Nonlinear) – A single multimedia story covering spot, daily or general news.
Please identify whether your multimedia story is linear, or non-linear.
Entrants may submit no more than five URLs.

Issue Reporting (Linear or Nonlinear) – A single multimedia story that explores social, cultural or political issues.
Please identify whether your multimedia story is linear, or non-linear.
Entrants may submit no more than five URLs.

Feature Story (Linear or nonlinear) – A single multimedia story about the human experience, sports or entertainment. Please identify whether your multimedia story is linear, or non-linear.
Entrants may submit no more than five URLs.

Innovation (Linear or Nonlinear) – An engaging combination of multimedia elements that enhance the story. You may include time-lapses, panoramas, and video. Anything goes here. Surprise us!
This category recognizes the art of innovation and experimentation in a single piece, series or multimedia package. The use of multiple media in the entry is encouraged.
Entrants may submit no more than five URLs.
Entries to Innovation may also be entered in one other category.

Best in Show (Linear or Nonlinear) – Judges may choose what they consider the best linear or non-linear multimedia story from the News Story, Issue Reporting and Feature Story categories.

A public judging will be held at the National Geographic building on February 8 & 9, 2014.

The Multimedia Committee and this year’s WHNPA Multimedia judges reserve the right to move entries into more appropriate categories or disqualify entries they feel don’t abide by the rules or meet the standards set forth in the bylaws of the WHNPA. They may also choose not to award a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place if there are not enough qualified entries per category.

Entries will be accepted no later than 11:59 p.m., Jan. 31, 2014. Entrants must be WHNPA members in good standing with all dues up to date.

1. Submit

Entries will be submitted via email to contest.multimedia@whnpa.org.
• The subject line of the email must include the category, the organization and the entrants first and last name e.g. News Story (linear) – washingtondcnews.com – John Doe.
• Please note in your entry if you have paid by mail or by PayPal.
• List the categories you have entered in your submission e-mail and the total amount paid.
• Entrants are encouraged to include a short summary with each URL (50 word max).
• Please provide a telephone number, email address and physical address at the end of your email.
