DESCRIPTION:The WHNPA is pleased to announce our traditional general membership meeting featuring presentations by contest judges in the staff auditorium on Friday night.\n\n\nMichael Robinson Chávez\nMichael Robinson Chávez has been a photographer at The Los Angeles Times since 2007. Prior to that\, he worked for The Washington Post\, The Boston Globe and The Associated Press. He has covered assignments in over 50 countries including: the Congolese Civil War\, tsunamis in Indonesia and Chile\, the Egyptian revolution\, life in Brazil’s slums\, gold mining in Peru\, the 2006 Hezbollah/Israeli war\, the conflict in Israel/Palestine and the US led invasion and occupation of Iraq. \nHe is a two time Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award for Photojournalism winner in 2015 and 2012 and Photographer of the Year by Pictures of the Year International in 2014 and 2010. He has has been named WHNPA’s Photographer of  the Year twice. \nHe is publishing a book of his photographs from Peru: “Awaiting the Rain\,” next year. In addition he teaches and lectures at workshops throughout the world including  Mexico\, Argentina\, India\, Thailand\, Egypt\, Peru\, Australia\, the United States and El Salvador.\n\n\n\nCatherine Orr\nCatherine Orr is the co-founder of  StoryMineMedia\, a documentary  production studio that produces  independent projects and partners  with nonprofits\, foundations\,  and other organizations to create  character-driven video stories that  move people to action.    \nOrr’s individual and collaborative work has been recognized  by Picture of the Year International\, College Photographer  of the Year\, SXSW Interactive\, and the Grantham Prize  for Environmental Journalism. Her first feature-length  documentary\, Overburden\, premiered at the Spring 2015 Full  Frame Documentary Film Festival. Overburden\, is the story of  a fiery\, pro-coal right-winger and a tenacious\, environmentalist  grandmother who take on the most dangerous coal company  in America. \nOrr is a graduate of the master’s program at the University of  North Carolina School of Media and Journalism\, where she  was a Roy H. Park Fellow\, and the editor-in-chief of “Coal:  A Love Story\,” an interactive documentary funded by the  Carnegie and Knight News21 initiative.

DESCRIPTION:Nation’s Leading Photojournalism Association Annual Contest Travel Exhibit Returns to Washington for Exhibit at FotoWeekDC. \n(WASHINGTON\, D.C. – Oct. 20\, 2014)  The White House News Photographers Association 2014 Eyes of History® traveling exhibit returns to Washington after a tour across the U.S. and will be showcased at FotoWeekDC. The show features the winning images from the 2014 Annual ‘Eyes of History®’ competition and includes still\, video\, multimedia and student winners. \nIn judging at National Geographic earlier this year freelancer photographer Astrid Riecken was named WHNPA’s Still Photographer of the Year and Getty Images Win McNamee was awarded Political Photo of the Year. Riecken won first prize in the Feature\, Picture Story International\, and Portfolio categories. “I am very\, very happy and extremely grateful that this happened\,” Riecken said after the win. “I appreciate this honor and recognition.” McNamee’s Political Photo of the Year was an image of President Barack Obama speaking in the White House briefing room about the Trayvon Martin case. McNamee said\, “I am very honored to have one of my photographs selected as the Political Photo of the Year and would like to thank the entire team at Getty Images for their amazing support and teamwork\,” McNamee said. “The WHNPA has a rich and wonderful history and I am humbled to have my photograph chosen from those produced by so many talented and deserving photographers.” \nWHNPA President Ron Sachs said\, “We are so pleased to partner with FotoWeekDC to showcase our traveling show. Our member photographers truly have a front seat to history and they appreciate the exhibit being back in Washington and the opportunity for thousands of FotoWeekDC visitors to see their work.” \nAlthough a printed exhibit\, the exhibit also displays the work of John Landy of BBC who was awarded the 2014 WHNPA Video Photographer of the Year and Lance Ing of WTTG – Fox – 5 News\, who was named WHNPA Video Editor of the Year. The top award for came after he entered the competition for the very first time. Landy said\, “It’s difficult to express my gratitude to the judges for selecting me as the recipient of the WHNPA award for Videographer of the Year. I am so humbled to have been chosen for this award knowing the quality of the field I was competing with.” Ing won the award as Video Editor of the Year for his first place finishes in General News\, Day Feature\, Editing Short Form\, Political/Campaign\, and Audio categories. Ing said\, “I am truly honored again. It has taken me ten years to get a title back.” \nThe ever-changing multimedia contest winners are also featured in the exhibit and some of the images depicted include Jim Lo Scalzo’s\, first place for Iowa’s County Fairs\, a story he produced for European Press Photo agency.  Team National Geographic took first place for the iPad version of The Last Chase\, a story produced for The National Geographic chronicling a devastating tornado and the last days of a storm chaser. Kainaz Amaria also took a first place for Planet Money Makes A T-Shirt\, a story produced for National Public Radio that uniquely chronicles the hidden world behind clothes sold in the United States. \nThe WHNPA also features a student contest and the travel exhibit features work by Jabin Botsford\, now an intern with The New York Times\, based in Washington\, who won the WHNPA Student Still Photographer of the Year. Jon Kasbe of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was named the WHNPA Student Video Photographer of the Year. \nThe top winners of the contests were honored at the annual ‘Eyes of History®’ gala in May at the Ritz-Carlton in Washington.  The annual black-tie event celebrates all the winning photojournalists and the President of the United States. Nearly 1\,000 guests\, including government dignitaries and industry celebrities\, attended. \nThe White House News Photographers Association® is a 93-year-old non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the efforts of Washington’s professional photojournalists. The WHNPA aims to provide professional and educational outreach to its members and the community through scholarships\, programming and the annual competition. \nThe WHNPA supports photographers in their work to chronicle images from the White House\, Capitol Hill\, embassies\, and other governmental organizations.
