(WASHINGTON, D.C. – Feb. 18, 2024) – The White House News Photographers Association® announced the winners of the Digital Storytelling categories of the Digital Storytelling division of the association’s 2024 ‘Eyes of History®’ visual journalism competition.
Zoeann Murphy of The Washington Post was selected as Multimedia Visual Journalist of the Year.
When told of her win, Murphy said, “It was a devastating news year with these awful wars in Ukraine and Gaza. But it’s an incredible honor to help tell the stories of the people most impacted by humanitarian and climate crises. I hope our journalism provides audiences with some of the insight necessary to make informed decisions. I’m so grateful to the people who trusted me with their stories and to my talented colleagues at The Washington Post who I collaborated closely with last year.”
WHNPA president Jessica Koscielniak commented, “The digital storytelling contest once again proves our industry is taking giant strides toward provocative multimedia storytelling. Zoeann’s portfolio represents the best in the business – it is thoughtful, emotional, and deeply impactful.”
The judges for the Digital Storytelling competition were Ed Ou, Anna Rothschild and Kate Woodsome, all independent visual journalists. Reflecting on the Digital Storytelling entries, Woodsome remarked, “This year’s work embodies the kind of sensitivity, creativity and determination needed to tell complex stories in a time of dramatic change. For multimedia journalist of the year Zoeann Murphy, her portfolio showcased remarkable breadth in the subjects she covered and agility in the ways she told them.”
Other top awards included work by NPR, BBC News, and The Washington Post.
The top winners of the still, video, digital and student contests will be honored at the annual ‘Eyes of History®’ gala on June 1, 2024, in Washington. The black-tie event celebrates all the winning visual journalists.
